This is the second time I've done the color red as a theme, and the first time I've repeated a theme. But the last time I chose red, it was December 2014, so most of the photos had a definite holiday look to them. This time I thought it would be more of a challenge to try seeking out red subjects in more everyday places and things, without the benefit of a lot of holiday decorations.
I really like this group of photos. Now that it's summer, the colors really pop. I'll admit it's not that hard to find red in a city with the Sox. But I tried to find a few other, less obvious shots as well, and once again stumbled upon some great finds, like the scooter and the chairs. This group also includes two photos from our recent trip to Sydney and Hong Kong. I have yet to put most of my travel photos online, and since I use my Instagram account just for this theme project, I haven't posted them there either. From time to time I have great photos that don't fit the current theme I'm on, so I don't post them on Instagram, which sometimes I regret. This was a small way to get at least two in there. I promise there are more to come!
Ahead of the curve
This theme was a departure for me from my usual geometric lines and shapes by focusing on curves. It was definitely a challenge! For starters, there are a lot more straight lines and angles in a city, especially one like Boston where there isn't a lot of modern architecture. So it was hard to find subject matter, and I had to really think in advance about good locations and options before heading out to take photos. I didn't stumble upon very many natural curves.
Once again, a theme also helped me solidify my style. I like a lot of these final photos, but I took a lot more pictures than normal that I wasn't happy with. I just didn't like the overall compositions as much, or I didn't find them as visually interesting. I really like the strong contrasts that straight lines and shapes can bring to a photo, and sometimes it was hard to express the whole curve I saw in front of me within the frame. Still, it was fun to try something new and force me out into this cold spring weather.
Out of sight, out of mind
Catch up post! In fall, I started a theme on forgotten and closed T entrances. The first one, at Mass Ave, caught my eye one day on my way home from work as actually kind of pretty. I realized I'd never used it, or really seen many people go through it either. I took the picture and thought of a few other entrances that have suffered the same, forgotten fate. Some are closed due to construction, some have been closed as long as I can remember, some are just around the corner and not very popular. But in a city saturated with subway stations and bus shelters, I found it surprising that there would be extras out there that aren't really used or even noticed. Maybe when the T has money again, these entrances will get some attention. Recognize them?
In the black (and white)
After doing several color themes, this time the challenge was to find photos that lacked color. I sought out subjects in black and white, meaning these images are technically in color, and I didn't actually grayscale them in the editing process. It wasn't easy, especially since I like wider compositions more than details and close-up viewpoints, and it's hard to find that much black and white naturally. A few of these photos do have a touch of color, but in most cases I thought it helped emphasize the monotone nature of the rest of the image. I did lower the saturation in editing and faded the blacks a bit, but that's been the style I've been gravitating toward lately with all my photos, not just this group.
I think there are stronger, bolder examples of black and white subject matter out there, and I hope to build on this set in the future. The inspiration for this theme came from a postcard my aunt found of black and white images from around New York City. It's a great example to strive for, both photographically and with the hope of sending my photos further out into the world one day.
Planes, Trains and the MBTA
After having a hard time coming up with my next theme, I thought of one while sitting in traffic on the bus on the way home from work. Maybe there was a way to make the commute more interesting? I called the theme transportation, but the photos are all pretty specific to my own route. At first, I felt like I wasn't representing all the various transportation options and subjects, especially since I see so many great photos on my favorite urban Instagram feeds. But then I realized these were an accurate capsule of my day. Except for the two from my trip to Chicago, all of these were taken on my way to and from work or on my lunch break. Shooting and editing along the way made those trips in traffic go a little faster.
